Sampling - Theory and Best Practice 2012
- 30th March 2012
- 27th July 2012
- 23rd November 2012
The mightiest operation starts with a single sample, often taken by the lowest-paid person on the team. Understanding the impacts of poor sampling, how to optimise the frequency size and the nature of the sample, and quantifying the errors associated with your samples is among the most important information you must have. In this course we look at the two principal issues associated with sampling – theory and practice. Sampling practice is concerned with how the sample is taken, delimited, reduced, transported and prepared; sampling theory tells us how to measure the errors associated with our sampling protocols, and as a consequence, how to optimise those protocols. The outcomes will be a detailed understanding of what the key issues in sampling are and how to ensure value add in the sampling process
Presenter
Ian Glacken has presented hundreds of courses to thousands of participants over the last 20 years. He is a geologist and a geostatistician who has developed and given courses in resource evaluation, QAQC, grade control, reconciliation and conditional simulation worldwide. Ian has a strong mining production background and is a regular auditor for the world’s largest mining companies. For more details see our people.
Audience
Any geologist, mining engineer or metallurgist who needs to design sampling schemes or understand/quantify the impact of current sampling schemes. Although the emphasis is on the ‘front end’ of the mining process, an overview of sampling throughout the mining cycle will be presented.
